Calcium Requirements for Adults
Ages 41 - 50 = 1000 mg calcium per day
During your forties, the first signs of age-related medical issues may arise. Heart disease, diabetes, depression, and anxiety can all take their toll. Life continues to be hectic and you may look back on your twenties and thirties and wonder if you can maintain that pace and energy. You may need to take things a bit easier, but you still have a lot of life left in you, and chances are you are a more mature, confident version of your younger self.
The Estrogen Effect
The primary contributor of the ailments that strike in your forties – hot flashes, mood swings, fatigue – relate to the fall of estrogen levels in the blood stream. This hormonal decline starts as perimenopause and eventually leads to menopause. As estrogen levels fall, bone density begins to decline more rapidly, increasing the risk of osteopenia or osteoporosis. Because your bones are hidden from sight they seldom show any signs of damage, so you need to be proactive about making sure your bones stay strong. The following bone health tips still apply:
Bone Density Testing - Knowledge is Power
The key to maintaining health well into your golden years is being actively involved in your health care. One very important measure of bone health is a bone density test or scan. This quick and painless test will give you a baseline of your bone density, and will be a clear indicator if you should be taking more aggressive steps to protect your bone mass. While health guidelines don't require this valuable test until age 65, if you know you haven't been practicing special care with your bones, it is a wise choice to get this test early. To learn more about bone density testing see the topic at MayoClinic.com.
